The exceptional quality of this piece lies in the intricate manipulation of raw abaca, a material known for its strength and durability. This showcases the skill and mastery required to weave this material. Given the complexity of working with abaca, I chose a simple yet refined design using knots and shaping techniques. Inspired by Scandinavian design principles, the piece emphasizes minimalism, clean lines, and natural materials, featuring soft edges and wooden elements.
This project links traditional craftsmanship and contemporary design, advocating for sustainable and ethical production. By creating a product that local abaca farmers can readily produce and sell, we are supporting their economic well-being and preserving traditional weaving techniques. The piece encourages users to appreciate the craftsmanship and connect with the cultural heritage behind the material.
